Towards Excellent English Teaching
Success in GCSE English is a crucial milestone in the life-long success of our students. As such, West Lakes Teaching School Alliance feel it pivotally important that we give whatever support we can to help schools across the West of Cumbria to provide the very best possible provision in English.
Schools working with us on this programme, have been paired with an experienced SLE who has been a successful Head of English and who is an active English teacher. SLE coaches are working with schools to train Excellence in Teaching mentors who will then work to support staff who are not yet performing at a high level.
The programme of training for Excellence Mentors consists a conference day at West Lakes Academy and four follow-up coaching visits from an SLE coach. These visits will help Excellence Mentors to refine and evaluate their practice, ensuring that the staff they work with have a greater impact on student performance.
The programme also includes a day’s conference at West Lakes Academy for the English teachers being supported through this programme. This conference will lay the groundwork for the mentor sessions that will follow in their own school.
